Back-to-School Vehicle Shopping in Los Angeles: Chrysler Pacifica vs. Dodge Durango for Busy Families

The first bell is closer than it feels. Los Angeles Unified students return Wednesday, August 12, and Burbank Unified starts the following day, with Pasadena Unified on August 17 and Glendale Unified on August 19. That gives most Valley families about two weeks to work out whether their current vehicle is up to another year of carpool runs, after-school activities, gear hauling, and weekend trips.

Two vehicles come up most often in that conversation: the Chrysler Pacifica and the Dodge Durango. Both are here at Van Nuys Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, and they solve the problem in genuinely different ways.

The stretch before the first day puts a vehicle through everything it will face all year at once. Supply runs to big box stores, sports equipment to practice, and multiple children to different schools across the San Fernando Valley.

In Los Angeles, where the 405 and the 101 are part of daily life rather than an occasional inconvenience, a family vehicle needs to be comfortable over long stretches of stop-and-go traffic, not just spacious on paper. Sorting it out now also means you can test drive more than one vehicle and work through financing at your own pace, rather than deciding in the first week of school when every other family calendar is competing for the same hours.

The Pacifica seats up to eight occupants and remains the most space-efficient answer to family hauling.

Its real advantage over a three-row SUV is Stow ‘n Go, and the distinction is worth understanding rather than just naming. In most three-row SUVs, folding the seats leaves you a raised, uneven load floor. In the Pacifica, the second and third rows fold completely flat into the floor, giving you a genuinely level cargo bay without removing a single seat. Cargo runs from 32.2 cubic feet behind the third row to 140.5 cubic feet with both rows folded. If you have ever tried to fit a bookshelf or a bike into an SUV with the seats up, you already know the difference.

The sliding doors matter more than people expect, too. A sliding door cannot swing into the car parked alongside you in a school lot, and a kid can operate it without help.

Power comes from a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 producing 287 horsepower through a nine-speed automatic, EPA-rated at 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Tri-zone automatic climate control, the Uconnect infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available rear-seat entertainment keep the cabin workable on long drives through Hollywood, Reseda, and Northridge.

For families who want three rows in an SUV rather than a van, the Durango is the one that leans hardest into capability, and for 2026 it leans harder still.

The headline change is that the HEMI is back across the lineup. The R/T 392 is now available with the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 producing 475 maximum horsepower, alongside the 5.7-liter HEMI, the supercharged 6.2-liter in the SRT Hellcat, and the 3.6-liter V6 at 295 horsepower. There is also a new America250 Edition offered across several GT and GT Plus trims. V8 power is no longer an upgrade you hunt for on this vehicle.

The Durango seats up to seven occupants across three rows, with available all-wheel drive, leather-trimmed seating, a premium sound system, and available rear-seat entertainment. Bold exterior styling and an elevated driving position are part of the appeal for drivers who never wanted a minivan in the first place.

On towing, Dodge rates a best-in-class available capacity of up to 8,700 pounds, and it is worth knowing what that requires: a HEMI V8 equipped with the Tow ‘n Go package. Without the package, the 5.7-liter is rated at 7,200 pounds, and the V6 at 6,200. All three handle a trailer or a boat, but if you are planning around something specific, spec the V8 and the package rather than the headline figure.

Neither the Pacifica nor the Durango is built around efficiency, and for some families that is the deciding factor on a Valley commute. If that is you, the all-new Jeep Cherokee is worth a look.

It is hybrid only, with no gas-only version offered. The 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder pairs with two electric motors for 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft, returning an EPA-estimated 39 mpg city, 35 highway, and 37 combined, with more than 500 miles of range on a single tank. Importantly for anyone who liked the idea of electrification but not the logistics, there is no plug involved and nothing to charge.

Four-wheel drive is standard on every trim, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. It carries 140 standard and available safety and security features, including standard Active Driving Assist, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Cargo runs 33.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 68.3 cubic feet with the seats folded, and it tows up to 3,500 pounds.

The tradeoff is straightforward: the Cherokee is a two-row SUV seating five. If you regularly carry more than three kids, it is out of the running regardless of the fuel savings. If you do not, it will cost you meaningfully less to run than either of the other two.

The decision usually comes down to how you actually use the vehicle rather than which one looks better on the driveway.

Choose the Pacifica if your daily reality is loading and unloading kids and gear. Eight seats, sliding doors, a low step-in height, and a floor that goes genuinely flat are not marketing features. They are why minivans still exist, and no SUV matches them.

Choose the Durango if you tow, want V8 power, or simply want to enjoy driving your family vehicle. Seven seats cover most carpools, and nothing in the minivan class approaches 8,700 pounds.

Choose the Cherokee if you need five seats rather than seven or eight and you would rather put the difference into fuel savings than capability you will not use.

There is no wrong answer here, and the fastest way to settle it is to sit in all three back to back and see which one your kids can get in and out of on their own.
